Patient Journey · Step 1

Triage

Your first contact with the multidisciplinary team. Each TMJ presentation is reviewed so that the right combination of specialists is engaged from the start, with imaging and clinical detail ready for your first consultation.

Triage and first contact at Auckland TMJ Centre

What triage means here

A surgeon-led routing process.

At Auckland TMJ Centre, we use a triage-based approach to ensure every patient receives the most appropriate and timely care. Each presentation is reviewed so that the right combination of specialists from the multidisciplinary team is engaged from the start.

By the time you meet your surgeon, the relevant clinical and radiological information is available to support a thorough diagnosis and a personalised treatment plan.

Three possible first steps

Entry routes into the team.

Depending on your symptoms and any prior treatment, your first appointment may be with a surgeon, a physiotherapist, the radiology partner, or a combination. These are parallel routes, not a sequence.

  1. 01

    Specialist Surgical Consultation

For complex or longstanding cases, or where imaging or prior treatment suggests surgical input is indicated, a direct appointment with one of our TMJ surgeons is recommended.

  2. 02

    Physiotherapy

For presentations likely to respond to non-surgical treatment, an initial consultation with one of our affiliated TMJ physiotherapists may be appropriate. Physiotherapy is one of several specialist disciplines coordinated within the multidisciplinary team.

  3. 03

    Imaging before your first visit

Our surgeons may request an MRI scan of the jaw joints before your first visit, so that clinical and radiological information is available for diagnosis from the first consultation.

Next steps

Start care with the team.

Request a specialist surgical consultation, or contact the clinic to discuss which entry route is right for you.
