Two recovery pathways.

Recovery looks different depending on whether you've had day surgery (arthroscopy or arthrocentesis) or open joint surgery. Both pathways are detailed below.

Most arthroscopy patients go home the same day. Open joint surgery and joint replacement require a short hospital stay. Physiotherapy is part of post-operative recovery, sequenced after the immediate healing period.

Day Surgery (Arthroscopy & Arthrocentesis)

Most patients go home the same day.

You may experience

  • Tiredness and lethargy from anaesthesia and anti-nausea medication.
  • Nausea or dizziness, related to the joint's proximity to the inner ear.
  • A temporary "funny" bite as swelling settles.
  • Pain, swelling, and bruising.
  • Blocked ear or reduced hearing, usually temporary, resolves on its own.

You may be prescribed or provided with

  • Anti-nausea medication to help manage symptoms.
  • Muscle relaxants to ease jaw tension, if required.
  • Antimicrobial ointment (Chloramphenicol) for wound care.

Bite splint: a custom-made splint to be worn for six months after surgery.

Open Joint Surgery / Joint Replacement

Requires a short hospital stay.

Recovery overview

  • A short hospital stay of one to two nights.
  • Initial swelling, bruising, and bite changes are common.
  • Recovery takes several weeks with splint use and physiotherapy.
  • Temporary hearing changes or blocked ear sensation may occur.
  • Discharge medications and follow-up are arranged before you leave hospital.
